Meet Our Staff

Pastor Dave Fall13Rev. David A. Carnahan, Senior Pastor

The oldest of 5 children who were all adopted and raised by our grandparents, Pastor Dave claims his Irish heritage with great vigor.  This proved to be quite a talking point while attending both Pacific Lutheran University - a Scandinavian school with a Lucia Bride celebration - and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis - a German school with an Oktoberfest celebration.  Neither of which compared to any St. Patrick's Day celebration!

Married since 1980 to Suzanne, the woman of his dreams (and Director of Children's Ministry, below), they have 3 sons:  Joshua, married to Kalinda since 2012 and serving our Lord Jesus as a Lutheran teacher in Ft. Wayne, IN; Benjamin, serving our Lord Jesus as a Lutheran pastor in his first congregation in La Jolla, CA (Pastor Dave's first congregation was in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia!); and Nathan, also serving our Lord Jesus as a Lutheran teacher in Carson City, NV.

Pastor Dave enjoys fly fishing, bird hunting, chocolate, bird watching, hiking, snow sports, chocolate, golf (why, he's never figured out), classic rock, chocolate, all things Irish . . . we think you get the picture.

Pastor Dave's favorite verses are Jeremiah 29:11-13:  "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.  Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.  You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart."   His favorite quote, absolutely favorite quote, is:  "Preach the Gospel at all times.  If necessary, use words."  - St. Francis of Assisi

Pastor Patrick Fall13Rev. Patrick M. Rooney, Associate Pastor

Pastor Patrick was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and although he misses Dodger Stadium and In-N-Out Burger, he wouldn't trade living in beautiful Bend for anywhere else!  He is married to Kari, our Director of Family Ministry (below), and is the father of two young boys.  In addition to being a lifelong Dodger fan, he also enjoys Star Trek, history, and reading, and can't say no to a good cookie.

After graduating from seminary, Pastor Patrick was called here to Trinity, where he was ordained and installed in July 2011.  His biggest passion for the pastoral ministry is in helping others learn more about their God and His love for them, so that they grow in their faith and see their life, community, and world through "cross-shaped lenses."

Pastor Patrick's favorite Bible verse is also his confirmation verse:  "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."  Isaiah 40:31

Carol Fall13Carol Podwils, Director of Music

Carol Podwils grew up in Ohio and attended Concordia Universities in Ann Arbor, MI and Seward, NE. But after almost 40 years in Oregon, she feels she and her husband Mark are at home in the Northwest.  Their daughter Becca, husband Brent, and two grandsons Haiden and Caleb live in Boise, Idaho. Their son Josh, wife Kate, and granddaughter Ruby live right here in Bend.

Growing up in the Lutheran Church, Carol’s memories of church center around being involved in music, even at an early age. That love of music, combined with a passion for teaching, has been the focus of her 35+ years of classroom and church music involvement.  Carol is also the elementary music teacher for preschool through 5th grade, and accompanies the high school and church choral groups.  She has been a presenter at music workshops at the national, district, and local level.

No matter the situation in life, “Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things!” (Ps 98:1) is her favorite verse.  She sums up her perspective on music ministry with this quote from Johann Sebastian Bach: "The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul."

Jon Vevia Fall13Jon Vevia, Director of Choirs

Jonathan Vevia is a pastor’s son and grew up in the Lutheran church.  He has many fond memories of growing up singing in church choirs, including playing percussion on a 2-gallon water jug in early contemporary services!  He is married to Kyla Vevia and they have an energetic son named Gibson. They moved to Bend in 2011 and feel blessed to be part of the growing community here at Trinity.

Jonathan earned his B.A. in Music from California Lutheran University.  His junior year he got his first church choir conducting job.  Since then he has directed choirs of all ages and led worship bands at many churches, conferences and events.  Jonathan also teaches music to grades 5-12 at Trinity Lutheran School.  He is currently working on his MME in Conducting from Colorado State University and will be finished Summer 2014.

His biggest passion in church ministry is showing people that no matter what gifts God has given you, you can still worship God through the gift of music.  One of his favorite Bible verses is, “Make a joyful NOISE to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into His presence with singing!” Psalm 100:1-2.  If God gave you the gift of singing, sing loud.  If He didn’t, sing even louder - don’t let Him forget what He gave you!

Suzanne Fall13Suzanne Carnahan, Director of Children’s Ministry

Suzanne Carnahan is Pastor Dave’s wife (above) and the mother of three grown sons serving as Lutheran pastors or teachers around the country.  She has a life-long love of teaching God’s Word, which began with a second-grade Sunday school class when she was in her teens.

Suzanne was drawn to children’s ministry in order to make the Bible engaging for children in the classroom and encourage parents to lead their children in faith at home.

When Suzanne is confused or discouraged, she goes to Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Kyla Fall13Kyla Vevia, Director of Youth Ministry

Born and raised in San Diego, Kyla moved up to Bend, Oregon in 2011 with her husband Jon Vevia and their son, Gibson. She has been a member of the Lutheran Church her entire life and loves the life God has led her and her family to here at Trinity.

Kyla earned her B.A. in History from San Diego State University and has been volunteering and working in Youth Ministry for almost six years.

Her favorite verse is 1 Corinthians 13:1-3:  "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.  And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.  If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing."

Kari has no greater passion in the church than family ministry.  She loves working with families to provide opportunities for them to learn from each other and grow in faith together.

Kari's favorite Bible verse is also her confirmation verse, from Exodus 4:12: “Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.”  She finds encouragement that God will give her the words to say.

Dawn 10 28 13 2Dawn Rompel, Parish Nurse

Nursing is Dawn’s calling, not just a profession. For almost 20 years, she has done it with her whole heart. She shares quality education and experience with anyone who desires to receive it. Not only that, she shares it with the love of Jesus through the Word of God and prayer. She volunteered for a year at Trinity and became part-time church staff in 2010.

Her hospital nursing experience is vast, having worked in multiple areas of healthcare from birthing to end of life and so much in between. Her personal experience with Alzheimer’s disease and cancer has given Dawn an edge of understanding and compassion. Still, she knows that the gap between all the experience, knowledge, and credible resources she shares is best filled with prayer.

Her passion after nursing is to offer encouragement and hope for your journey. She also loves to sing and dance with her 3 granddaughters and have relationship with anyone willing to take a moment to share.

“My Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27   May these words of Jesus touch your heart today!
